Advance Warning System for railway staff working on track

Problem Statement in Detail

Safety of the railway  staff working on track like Keyman, Patrolmen, Trackmen, Signal  maintainer, Telecom maintainer, SSE/JEs of P-Way/S&T, TI is endangered, especially in foggy weather, in tunnels, on curves & bridges and multiple line track. A device is required which can give an advance warning to track maintenance and other staff about an approaching train in block section so that working staff are alert about the approaching train.

Technical Requirement

  1. The system shall be capable of working in Indian Railway Service Conditions.
  2. This system should be suitable for Single Line/Multiple Lines Unidirectional/ Bidirectional lines.
  3. The system should have capability to give warning of approaching train minimum 30 sec (configurable) in advance to track maintenance and other staff working at site.
  4. The system should be able to work on 25KV AC electrified sections of Indian railways.
  5. The system should be capable of working in non air conditioned environment in the field.
  6. The system should have sufficient & reliable power supply arrangements with adequate back up of not less than 5hrs.
  7. The equipment should be handy and easy to carry for the user.
  8. The equipment should have “ON-OFF” switch, low battery indication & system down indication.
  9. The system should not miss warning of any train.
  10. The system should communicate through reliable communication technique. Signal strength should be strong enough for proper reception.

Functional Requirement

  1. The system should generate necessary audio/visual alarms with vibration alert of approaching train minimum 30 sec (configurable) in advance to track maintenance and other staff working at site. The vibration/sound of audio alert shall be continuous for minimum 30 sec (configurable) and should be adequate to draw the attention of the user and shall stop soon after trains passed work site.
  2. This system should be suitable for Single Line/Multiple Lines Unidirectional/Bidirectional lines as required by user.
  3. The system should be independent of availability of line of sight. It should be able to work on hilly terrains, ghat sections, tunnels, thick forest / vegetation/buildings/sharp curves etc. This should also take care of “shadow zones’ if any.
  4. Proposed system should be independent from existing system as far as possible.
  5. The system should use any technology for warning of train in particular section, however, it should not give false warning of train of other block sections.
  6. The system should neither be affected by nor cause any effect on signaling system and OHE system of Indian Railways.
  7. The system should not interfere with functioning of the existing telecommunication system of Indian Railways
  8. The system should work both in Absolute Block System/Automatic Signalling Territory.
  9. The system should be capable to detect train direction on each line and generate alert only for approaching trains towards work sites
