Policies, procedures and performance

Managing a successful HEI is not an easy operation. The task of running a complex operation involving research, teaching and innovation is not an easy one. It is imperative that organisations have detailed written policies, procedures and performance metrics to manage HEI at all levels. These must be tightly implemented. Unfortunately, we often find that these are not fully spelled out, inconsistent or incomplete, and poorly implemented by senior management. Without setting and appraising “Key Performance Indicators” for all functional units, it is impossible to objectively review their performance and set future targets. Furthermore, rewarding well-performing functional units and modernising poor-performing functional units is important. Often this does not happen where well-performing units continue to subsidise and supplement poor-performing functional units. We evaluate and appraise HEI policies, procedures and performance metrics, help them make changes, and put a framework for them to manage these objectively.

Our services

  • Appraisal of current policies, standard operating procedures (SOP) and performance metrics for individuals and functional units.
  • Documenting policies and procedures with stakeholders if they do not exist. Policies include and are related to but are not limited to students, admissions, teaching, research, degrees, innovation, recruitments and human resource management, misconduct and grievance disciplinary procedures, appeals, digital data, emails, equipment, sustainability, disability, health and safety, continuous professional development, risk management, security, media, intellectual property, institutional partnerships, placements, fraud and bribery, finance, flexible working, estates, student mentoring and quality assurance.
  • Appraisal of management practices used in implementing policies and SOPs to identify areas for change

Our approach

Setting up of HEI management structures and functional units with a well-documented set of policies and standard operating procedures is fundamentally important for HEI success. Key performance indicators must be realistic, set at each level of performance, well-understood by those responsible for achieving them, and should have positive rewards when successfully met. We work closely with HEI top management to appraise, document a plan of action and help implement changes.
